Elderly people attacked and robbed on Ohrigstad farm

An elderly lady (80), man (68) and woman (58) were tied up by five robbers on a farm outside Ohrigstad on Friday January 28 at about 16:15.

The five armed attackers allegedly awaited the victim outside his house.

“It is alleged that the 68-year-old man was attacked by five armed suspects after he arrived on the farm. The suspects forced the victim to the main house, and upon arrival, they tied him, his wife and the mother-in-law up,” said Brig Motlafela Mojapelo, a Limpopo police spokesperson. They assaulted the three victims and demanded the safe keys.

Wedding rings, a laptop, cellphone, binoculars, credit cards, passports and an undisclosed amount of money in foreign currency were stolen.

“The suspects then fled the farm using the couple’s Ford Ranger bakkie. The victims managed to alert one of the employees who immediately notified the police,” said Mojapelo.

“A joint search operation involving the local police, neighbouring police stations, the local farm watch, private security and tracker companies ensued. The stolen vehicle was spotted a few kilometres outside Burgersfort, and seeing that they were being cornered, the perpetrators abandoned it and fled on foot. The stolen items were not recovered.”

Lt Gen Thembi Hadebe, the Limpopo police commissioner, has commended the partnership between the private sector and the police, which resulted in the vehicle being recovered.

Hadebe further appealed to community members to assist the police to ensure a speedy arrest of the perpetrators of the farm attack.
