Sponsors bring festive cheer to Katoen children
It was a day full of joy and laughter as the children of Katoen were treated to a Christmas party complete with presents, sweets and food.
The party was hosted at Katoen outside town, which houses several disadvantages and struggling families in the Lowveld.
With the day’s festivities starting at 11:00 on Saturday, children and their parents gathered at the communal area at the camp as sweet packs and toys were handed to the excited kids.
Food parcels were also given to the parents who happily watched their children relish in their gifts before running to play with their friends.
Elise Ohlsen of Help Foundation Mpumalanga said she had been planning the Christmas party since September. “We really wanted the children to have fun and feel special. We reached out to many people for sponsors. It was a lot of planning but it was all worth it to see how much the children and their parents enjoyed the day,” she said.
One mother, Landie de Jongh, said everyone was grateful for the party and to those who had organised it.
“It is all for the children and to see how happy they are is the best present,” she said.
Ohlsen said there were numerous sponsors for the part such as Fedics, White River Spur, West End Spur, i’langa Spur, SPAR DC, Platsak, Farmyard Créche, private donors and Lewende Woord Laeveld.
“Fedics sponsored 100 food parcels while the Spurs gave us 100 burgers for those present at the party,” she said.
She said Spar DC gave a generous cash donation while Platsak sponsored four giant cakes for the festivities.

“Farmyard Crèche lent us their jumping castle for the day and the church (Lewende Woord Laeveld) packed us 100 sweet packs. One of the churchgoers even baked and decorated 100 cupcakes for us.”
She also thanked BNS Auto Services and Repairs and MR Diesel for their contributions.
“Thank you to everyone who made this day possible. We are extremely grateful for all the support. This is all about the children and them having fun.”
She said the Help Foundation assists 23 families in Katoen with monthly food parcels.
