Speeders fined in Kruger

SANParks said despite campaigning and warnings, people are still speeding in the park.

Several motorists received fines for speeding in the Kruger National Park (KNP) over the weekend amid a public outcry regarding this offence in the park.

According to SANParks, a total of 11 speeding fines were issued over the weekend along the Paul Kruger Road with the highest speed being 105 kilometres an hour. On the road between Letaba and Shingwedzi two fines were issued and another two fines were issued on the Pretoriuskop Road. One fine was issued on the Lower Sabie Road and seven on the road between Orpen and Tshokwane.

SANParks said a spot fine of R2 000 was paid at the Skukuza’s reception and a total of R3 000 in fines were paid for the offences between Letaba and Shingwedzi.

“Despite campaigning and warnings, people are still speeding. These are fines issued this past weekend only and it is unacceptable to find people driving at these high speeds. Patrols are continuing and drivers will face the consequences of their actions,” read a statement that was posted in a Facebook group by SANParks.

After a cheetah was recently killed by a motorist in the park there has been pressure on SANParks to enforce speed limits.

Ike Phaahla, the spokesperson for the KNP, previously said the Kruger was experiencing problems with visitors speeding.

“Visitors should learn to plan their trips carefully so as to avoid speeding before gates close. They should keep their litter in the car and dispose of it at appropriate, designated areas.”
