Local businesswomen start Friendship in a Handbag initiative

The members of SACBW Nelspruit support one another's businesses as much as possible to help them grow, and they now want to share their support to local women who have survived abuse.

The South African Council for Businesswomen (SACBW) Nelspruit has embarked on a journey to restore hope and dignity to survivors of GBV.

Tracy-Erin Duggan of SACBW said the local organisation wants to warm hearts and bring change through the Friendship in a Handbag initiative.

Duggan said, “We have a chance to make a real difference. Every woman deserves to feel like a lady and deserves to experience the feeling of being able to reach into their handbag and pull out something as small as lipstick, hand cream, tissue or a breath mint.

“These things are taken for granted by many, but there are countless women out there who have never experienced this seemingly simple thing.”

Duggan said this gesture can change the perspective of someone who has lost hope.

“Imagine being able to give an experience that can change someone’s life by simply donating an old, previously loved handbag. After all, as women we are on the same side and we need to start looking after one another.

“SACBW wants to urge the community to help make this plan possible by donating your pre-loved handbag. Fill it with things such as a scarf, beads, earrings, tissues, perfume and anything that you may wish to. You can also add a personal motivational letter to the person who will receive it. The note must be anonymous; do not write your name,” she explained.

Drop off the handbags at the Stegmanns Inc offices in 6 Streak Street. You can also drop them off at the next SACBW event, which will be held at Tindlovu at the Gardens on August 26.
