Madiba honoured by trees planted and schools cleaned

Good Samaritans have volunteered to improve local schools in the Mabocha village in Ward 30 of the Fetakgomo Tubatse Local Municipality.

As part of their 67 Minutes for Mandela Day, members from the South African National Civic Organisation’s Kgwerere branch, ANC members of Tubatse and CPF members planted trees at Nkota Secondary School on Sunday. The team was also joined by the school management team. Lazarus Maphuti Magale, one of the volunteers, said this was in a bid to make local schools greener. “This July, we will visit local schools in our village. Not only Nkota has received these trees; Mokobola Primary has also benefited from these donations. Our preschools, Bogotswadi and Malete, also received some trees.”

According to the community members, they have lined up appointments with other local schools for either tree planting or cleaning the school premises. Edward Mafane of the ANC said Mandela advocated for better environmental protection. “The commitment is being passed on to the next generation. We want our kids to learn the importance of trees.” Nelson Mandela Day is an annual celebration of Mandela’s life and a global call to action for people to recognise their ability to do something to change the world around them. On this day, people around the world are asked to devote 67 minutes of their time, changing the world for the better in a small gesture of solidarity with humanity. It celebrates the 67 years of his life that Mandela gave in the struggle for justice.
