A difficult road ahead for victim of hit-and-run

It has been an emotional rollercoaster ride for Wihan de Jager (25) who lost his leg in a horrific accident on June 25.

Since the accident De Jager has undergone three operations at Rob Ferreira Hospital. In one of them, his leg had to be amputated due to it being torn apart when he had crashed into a sharp and dangerous edge of a side barrier.

According to the first X-rays, he had suffered a broken hip and arm. They recently realised that both his femurs had also broken. He underwent the third operation on Tuesday to repair his broken arm.

De Jager’s life changed irrevocably after a Hyundai H100 one-ton light commercial vehicle crashed into his scooter and drove away, leaving him critically injured and helpless on the R40 towards Mbombela.

“We are trying to stay positive, especially Wihan. It has been a very traumatic experience,” said Johan de Jager, his father.

Since Wihan has no medical aid, the family request that donations be made to contribute to medical costs. “We have received some donations. The people of the Lowveld are really opening their hearts to help,” said Johan.

If you would like to help the family with regard to medical costs, you can send a message to Willa de Jager (his mother) on 083 267 2908.
