Fire season not over yet

André Scheepers of Lowveld and Escarpment Fire Protection Association (Lefpa), confirmed on Monday that they have been fighting to contain the blaze that started on Saturday in Bushbuckridge, and are currently on day three. Lefpa has four helicopters combating the fire, as well as ground crew.

BUSHBUCKRIDGE – A fire that started over the weekend was still wreaking havoc in the area along Injaka Dam yesterday.

This happened after a fire was out of control in White River near the saw mill on the R40 towards Hazyview. It started late Saturday afternoon and residents nearby were extremely worried and took to Facebook to ask for prayers and help.

Photos and updates were posted by Jenna Clifford, who was in Johannesburg at the time, but whose mother and home were in danger.

“Thank you to all of you who assisted and those of you who prayed. My friends and men who all risked their lives to save nature and the farm house,” she posted on Sunday morning.

Lefpa has since confirmed that the fire in White River was successfully extinguished with the help of four planes and ground crew on Sunday morning (after a flare-up), but the fire in Bushbuckridge is yet to be contained. There is no indication as yet as to the extent of the blaze.

An investigation into the cause of both fires will be launched in due course.
