WATCH: Man clings to bonnet for nine kilometres

A domestic dispute resulted in a man clinging for dear life to the bonnet of his girlfriend's car as she sped along the R40 on Friday morning.

Selby Nkambule told Lowvelder that his partner, Happiness Mokone, was supposed to meet him at the Mbombela District Court on a domestic matter that he had initiated.

“This is not the first time that she avoided the matter. But this time when she drove off at the courthouse without going inside, and with our five-year-old child in her car, I followed her in my own car.”

Nkambule explained that Mokone eventually stopped at the fuel station in Rocky Drift, and that he parked close to her and started walking towards her car window.

“The next minute she drove forward, hit my lower legs with the car and I grabbed onto the bonnet.”

Nkambule said Mokone did not stop, despite shouts from other motorists at the fuel station, and turned onto the R40 towards Mbombela.

“Happiness just sped up, and I was shouting at her to ‘stop, stop’ and banging on the window.”

A motorist driving in the opposite direction, Adriaan Smuts, said he could not believe his eyes when he saw the car racing towards them with the petrified man hanging on.

“I made a U-turn and followed the car, trying to block the driver off.”

Smuts said that every time he got close, Mokone rammed his vehicle with hers. “Fortunately I have a strong bull bar, but she was doing damage to her own car without any apparent care.”

Another motorist joined the fray and they managed to bring her to a semi-stop a few kilometres from the Kiaat Hospital entrance. “But the next minute she saw a gap and sped off again.”

Smuts added that he was very concerned, not only for the unfortunate bonnet surfer, but because there was a child in the car.

Jacques Meiring, of Divergent Ops, confirmed that one of his reaction vehicles and the police managed to bring Mokone to a full stop at the Volvo dealership in Mbombela.

“It was not easy as she kept trying to hit our vehicle using her car as a battering ram.”

At the time of going to press Nkambule said that he had not opened a case against Mokone yet.
Mokone told Lowvelder to phone back, as she could not comment at the time, but was not available later on.
