Mpumalanga water levels drops to 65.2 per cent

Even though the Provincial water levels are still above the 50 per cent mark, there are areas and dams that are critically below the 50 per cent mark and dropping week on week.

The Mpumalanga Province continues to record declines in water volumes with the latest Department of Water and Sanitation weekly state of reservoirs report of 02 September 2019 showing a drop from last week’s 66.2 per cent to 65.2 per cent as recorded on Monday.

The report also shows that water levels in the water management areas also continue to decline, with the Olifants water management area dropping from 55.2 per cent to 54.5 per cent and the Inkomati-Usuthu water management area dropping from 69.8 per cent to 69.1 per cent.

Even though the Provincial water levels are still above the 50 per cent mark, there are areas and dams that are critically below the 50 per cent mark and dropping week on week.

In the Ehlanzeni District, Primkop Dam is unchanged at 16.3 per cent, Klipkopjes Dam further dropped from 34.1 per cent to 33.6 per cent and the crucial Kwena Dam also further dropped from 48.7 per cent to 47.4 per cent.

In the Nkangala District, the majority of the listed dams are still above 80 per cent with only the Rhenosterkop Dam which supplies communities in the Thembisile Hani and Dr JS Moroka local municipalities critically low and dropping further from last week’s 1.4 per cent to 1.3 per cent.

The Jericho Dam in the Gert Sibande District recorded a slight increase from 62.6 per cent to 64.1 per cent and the rest of the dams dropped in water volumes. Morgenstond Dam which is below 50 per cent further dropped from 42.3 per cent to 41.1 per cent.
The Department of Water and Sanitation would like to appreciate all those who are going the extra mile in conserving the little water that is available and further encourage everyone to make water conservation and wise use a priority as water is life and has no substitute.
