Optometrist practising without licence released on warning

Investigations revealed that he had issued eye test reports to non-qualifying driver's and learner's licence applicants.

ACORNHOEK – A man practising as an optometrist without a valid operating licence was released on a warning by the Acornhoek Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday. The 45-year-old was identified as Skhumbuzo Asquith Mohlaba, who continued to practice after his licence had expired last November.

His actions were in contravention of the Health Professions Council of South Africa Act. Mohlaba provided services to communities in Acornhoek and its surrounds and faces additional charges of issuing eye test reports to ineligible driver’s and learner’s licence applicants.

He will appear in court again on August 28, pending further investigations.
