Runners beat their best at Uniwisp 5-in-1

The Uniwisp Fast 5-in-1 lived up to its name when the event record was shattered on Saturday.

This marathon, organised by Nelspruit Marathon Club, saw Japie Jele finish the 50-kilometre race in an astonishing 3:02,13, breaking last year’s record of 03:05 by almost three minutes.


His time was hotly contested by Renier Grobler of Murray Roberts, who ran his personal best of 03:02,42.
The first woman to cross the finish line was Legotote Villagers’ Tlangeni Mthimkhulu, who did so in respectable time of 04:32,21.
Lovers Hlatshwayo of Nedbank LVCC won the 42,2 km race in a time of 2:35,06, more than four minutes ahead of the runner-up, Donald Mashaba.
In this division, Debbie O’Mahoni reigned supreme among the women, finishing the race in 03:14,56. Karin Booyes of Nedbank was the second to finish in a time of 03:18,15.


Abednico Mashaba of Born to Win, who had just come off a win at the Power of Love Nite Race, was the first male to finish the 21,1 km race. Dwarsrivier’s Tebogo Phulusa almost beat his time, but narrowly missed out with a time of 01:07,48 – just 0,45 seconds behind him.
Angeline Molaba ran this distance in 01:29,40 to become the first woman to finish, followed by Eskom’s Lina Mhlongo.
Victor Mashaba of Nedbank LVCC won the 10 km race and, despite Sibonkozi Maseke of Ngodwana refusing to admit defeat, Mashaba still managed clench the win in a time of 30:52.
Hoërskool Nelspruit pupil Thembi Khosa, who was also the winner of the Power of Love race in her division, beat LowMed teammate Momvula Seleke to become the winner of the 10 km race. She did so in a time of 41:23.
The Uniwisp Fast 5-in-1 is one of only two races that serve as a qualifier for the Comrades (in June this year) and Two Oceans (in April this year), hence a
25 per cent growth in popularity.
A total of 1 464 runners took to the Sabie/Lydeburg Road by bus, to make their way down to the finish line at Mbombela Stadium.
The Uniwisp Kaapsehoop 3-in-1 will take place on the first Saturday of November.
