Blessing takes the spoils in New York

Through pure determination, and with the help of the community he recently performed for the industry star-makers in New York City.

MBOMBELA – Lowveld High School’s Blessing Mabusela not only did his family proud, but his school and his country when he recently won Talent America.

Through pure determination, and with the help of the community he recently performed for the industry star-makers in New York City.

Talent America is the United States’ longest-running talent competition and many of today’s hottest actors, models, singers, dancers and entertainers got their big break through this. It has been helping performers – like Patrick Dempsey – “shine like the stars they are” for the past 45 years.

Blessing’s journey to the show started when he entered his own contemporary dance piece in the 2017 Nelspruit Eisteddfod. There his remarkable talent was first noticed. Thereafter he was sponsored to start undergoing formal training in contemporary dance at Tolly’s Dance Academy in Mbombela.

He recently participated in the regional competition of Talent Africa where he was given an award for best performance. Then he qualified to go to the national leg in Johannesburg on April 7. There the youngster bagged gold and silver medals for contemporary dance and modelling respectively.

He was also awarded federation colours and made it onto the South African team to participate in Talent America, where he bagged several awards, including overall winner, divisional winner, international high-score winner and the pinnacle award.

Now he is a step closer to realising his new dream of performing on Broadway. Since the competition, he has already received two callbacks from New York.

“Blessing epitomises everything that Lowveld High School stands for. Things have not come easily for him. He has taken advantage of every opportunity that has come his way and worked extremely hard in spite of the obstacles and difficulties he has experienced. His mentor, Megan Goodwin, a teacher at the school has supported and assisted Blessing in ways far beyond that which we expect from a teacher. As I told Blessing, he is a blessing to his family, to his school and to South Africa,” the principal of Lowveld High School, Jane Wandrag said.
