Student protesters close gates at University of Mpumalanga

Students blocked the main gate with burning tyres and trash cans at the University of Mpumalanga today.

Staff and students were denied access this morning and the Fulbright American Scholarship information session that was scheduled for this afternoon also had to be cancelled.

Carol Wilson, Fulbright program coordinator, said that she hoped that the event would take place as soon as possible. “We heard that the session might only take place in April,” Wilson said.

At this stage reasons as to why the students are protesting are unclear. Lowvelder is unsure if protests are related to the recent Listeriosis scare at the University.
