Lowvelders speak out about abnormal water tanks on local roads

Facebook was abuzz with comments yesterday about the abnormally large water tanks that are being transported on local roads and the dangers associated with them.

MBOMBELA – Large water tanks being transported to the city through Schoemanskloof, as well as towards surrounding towns, have intermittently disrupted traffic for at least a month.

The “abnormal” loads have caused massive delays on the N4 at least three times. Recently, one pulled the traffic light at the entrance to White River over after getting hooked onto the pole.

Following Lowvelder’s report about Alexandra Asman that was involved in an accident with one of the abnormal trucks on Long Tom Pass, comments started streaming in on social media:

Lowvelder reported on Tuesday that Alex Asman wrote on Facebook how a police van drove into the back of the car in front of her as one of the abnormal vehicles came around a blind rise. She swerved to miss the police van, and hit a truck on the side of her car.

The manufacturers of the large, white containers, Hydra Arc, said they were ordered by the provincial government to be used for water provision for rural communities.

However, neither the departments of public works, co-operative governance, nor safety and security have any knowledge of the tanks.

Hydra Arc indicated that many more were headed in this direction.

* If anyone has any information about the trucks, please contact tereasa@lowvelder.co.za. Lowvelder will continue to investigate in an effort to give motorists more information as to when and where these vehicles will be moving.
