Burning tyre blocks TVET College entrance

At lunchtime, vehicles were unable to get in and out of the college's gate and students were forced to use a side pedestrian gate.

MBOMBELA – When Lowvelder arrived on the scene at lunchtime, the protesting students were nowhere to be seen.

Naspoti J&M Security Solutions guards had closed the gate. The company’s Mr Michiel van de Venter said there had been a group of 20 to 25 people gathered when the tyre was lit.

Manager of communications for Ehlanzeni TVET College, Mr Mxolisi Nzimande, said the group was upset about the outcome of a meeting concerning the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS).

“Some of the students want transport money to be paid directly into their bank accounts, instead of the college buying monthly bus vouchers,” he said.

He added that others also want accommodation funds to be paid into their private bank accounts so that they can sort out their own residence options.

The remains of the burning tyre were moved to the side so that cars could travel through the gate.
