“Nose trial” – state to call more witnesses

A piece of Mr Brian Barnard's nose was picked up in Bahati's parking lot after the alleged assault.

WHITE RIVER – The so-called “nose case” will continue on January 11 and 12 next year. This was confirmed in the White River Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

The postponement was requested by the state and will enable them to call a fourth witness in the case against J&M Security’s Mr Werner and Mr Shaun Terblanche.

According to Mr Brian Barnard, he had been assaulted by members of J&M security in November 2013. Lowvelder previously reported that Barnard was at a bar near White River, having a conversation with someone he didn’t know was a suspect in a farm attack. Someone informed the police and J&M Security members that the suspect was there and they went to arrest the man.

They ordered the people sitting at Barnard’s table to lie on the ground, to which he protested as the men wore civilian clothing. Barnard alleged that someone from J&M hit him with the back-end of a gun. In another previous interview with Lowvelder, Barnard said he was further assaulted after he had been dragged out to the pub’s parking lot.

This was where a piece of his nose was picked up a day after the alleged assault.

The Terblanche brothers pleaded not guilty to the assault charges against them. Testimony in favour of their case has not been led in court yet. Two doctors and the complainant have already testified in favour of the state.
