Why did Facebook and Instagram crash?

Although early reports about the crash had not yet established the cause of the server shutdown, it has now come to light that the two social-media giants were infact hacked.

Earlier today, social media platforms, namely Facebook, Instagram, amongst others, were offline for up to an hour.

When social media fanatics across the globe struggled to log onto their favourite sites, they took to Twitter– which survived the shut-down- to vent out their frustations.

Soon, the hashtag #facebookdown became the global trending topic.

Although early reports about the crash had not yet established the cause of the server shutdown, it has now come to light that the two social-media giants were infact hacked.

According to FoxNews, “The hacking group Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for what it said was an attack that briefly knocked several social-networking sites, including Facebook and Instagram, offline early Tuesday.”

According to the same article, Lizard Squad claimed responsibility for the outage in a Twitter posting that listed the sites it said it had affected, which included matchmaking app Tinder, AIM, and HipChat. The message concluded with the hashtagged statements “offline” and “LizardSquad.”

On its website for developers, Facebook said the “major outage” lasted one hour. It said its engineers had identified the cause but did not elaborate.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
