Couple survives crash into stray hippo

They collided with the hippo at a dip in the road. As it was very dark it was difficult to see animals crossing the road.

KARINO – A hippo had to be shot early Saturday morning after it was hit by a vehicle on the N4 near Karino.

A husband and wife were the only passengers in the Toyota Hilux and fortunately only sustained minor injuries in the accident.

ER24 attended to the scene and treated the couple for injuries they sustained when the airbags deployed from the impact.

They collided with the hippo at a dip in the road. As it was very dark it was difficult to see animals crossing the road.

According to Mr Jacques Meiring from Bossies Community Justice (BCJ), the hippo sustained more severe injuries and
sadly had to be shot.

“The hippo’s back was completely dislocated by the impact. We then received permission from the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency to shoot the animal, which I duly did with my 9mm handgun,” Meiring said.

BCJ , Phoenix K9, ADT and White River Flying Squad were on scene at approximately 01:00 to assist.
