Review: Sumting Fresh for brunch

“Come hungry” is perhaps one of the most widely used promises by restaurants across the world and very rarely do you come across a restaurant that means it.

As far as rarity goes, however, Sumting Fresh is as rare as it gets.

Co-owned by Hezron Louw and Andrew Leeuw, the gourmet street food brand started in  2012 in a taxi and has since become a gem on the city’s street food scene.

Joburg residents who have made a point of heading out to the city’s hottest social spots over the weekend would have probably encountered the Sumting Fresh team and their signature Chicken Goujon dish at locations such as the Neighbourgoods Market or the Fourways Farmers Market.

Over the years, they built a reputation as the high-energy upbeat team with the rhyming chants that kept patrons amused as they waited to be served from a select street food menu complete with signature cocktails.

Seven years since the brand was first established, they now call the quaint Joburg suburb of Norwood home.

It is in their colourful and cosy Norwood location that the Citizen got a taste of their upcoming brunch menu.

From 12 June 2019 onwards, customers will now be able to order starters such as dim sum, deviled eggs and scotch eggs as well as mains such as cheeseburger spring rolls, creamy tomato soup and cheese toastie, egg mayo Sando, Nashville hot Sando and salmon toast to name a few.

Portion sizes are deceivingly small so one really should come hungry when trying out the brunch menu.

While the deviled eggs and scotch eggs leave much to be desired, the Nashville hot Sando more than makes up for it.

The new brunch menu will be accompanied by two new additions to the already delicious drinks menu: mimosas and bloody marys.
