Want to get rid of your double chin? You can with chin lipo

Chin liposuction – also known as chin lipo or Chin BBL – is shaping up to be the latest trend in cosmetic surgery.

This cosmetic procedure is not new in itself, but demand for it has increased in recent years, especially among young people.

According to Nicole Frontera, an American nurse practitioner, Gen Zers in their early 20s appear to be increasingly fixated on their jaws and chins, she tells Nylon. And those who go under the knife don’t hesitate to talk about it with those around them, and especially on social networks.

This creates a domino effect. The more they talk about it, the more other social media users are inspired to have chin liposuction too.

On TikTok, for example, the #chinlipo hashtag has racked up almost 200 million views. In many of the videos posted, young, mainly American women give an unfiltered account of the surgical process and their experience of healing. Meanwhile, before/after videos show women going from a double chin to a sleeker, more streamlined jaw.

Testimonials from young women who have undergone chin lipo are plentiful on social networks and in the media.

For Hannah Cassidy, an American journalist in her 30s, her “round face has always been a source of love and insecurity”, she writes in a PopSugar article. She feels more confident now that her chin has been reshaped.

The same goes for Rhea Cartwright, a strategic beauty consultant, who sports a new jawline after years of having a complex about that body part.

“My offending former chin was small and, in my opinion, not in proportion with my other features. This made me feel like my face was constantly unbalanced,” she says in a Refinery29 article.

The quest for facial perfection

Chin lipo is aimed at people who want to restructure and streamline their lower face.

“Liposuction of the neck is a surgical procedure I provide for my patients who have excess fat where a nonsurgical option wouldn’t benefit them entirely,” ENT consultant and plastic surgeon, Kambiz Golchin, told Byrdie.

“This surgery enables me to remove the patient’s fat and sculpt a natural contour to the chin and neck.” The goal is to achieve a more defined, angular and athletic-looking appearance.

According to Dr. Sergio Alvarez, interviewed by Nylon, this desire is totally in line with the times. This fascination with “athletic” faces coincides with the return of the beauty conventions of the 1990s and 2000s, marked by slender, sculpted features, prominent cheekbones and angular faces. And this fashion has repercussions on the choice of certain aesthetic procedures.

For example, buccal fat removal, which removes fat from the cheeks, was among the most popular procedures in 2022, according to figures from the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS).

For those who don’t wish to resort to invasive techniques to refine their chin, there are other, more accessible solutions.

For example, there are fabric masks designed specially to help get rid of double chins. This product fits over the chin, and attaches behind the ears, promising to reshape the contour of the face, reducing a double chin with repeated use.

There’s also the “mewing” technique which transforms the face without the need for liposuction, thanks to tongue posture correction exercises aimed at achieving a toned, chiseled jaw.

The gua sha is also said to be an effective facial massage tool for reducing a double chin.
