D1909 road rehabilitation project started

The rehabilitation project of the D1909 road that spans the 17 km stretch of road that links the tourism and farming town of Hoedspruit with the Eastgate Airport has started.

The Roads Agency Limpopo (RAL), Roads and Infrastructure will rehabilitate the road in two phases. The first 6 km phase started on November 28 and is expected to be completed by March 2023. They will break over December from December 15 and will restart on January 10. Repairs to the shoulder of the road are currently in progress.

The potholes between Eastgate and the Timbavati gate was repaired through a separate project of the Limpopo roads and transport department. This project will not include the first 6 km from the Boom to the airport but is part of phase 1 by the RAL contractor. “Motorists will breathe a sigh of relief as this 17km stretch of road will soon be rehabilitated. This comes in handy as the airport is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment.

With an average of 150 monthly flights and over 7 000 passengers passing through its gates on any given month, we had to come on board and provide the proper road infrastructure to strengthen the influx of capital into the province,” said Nkakareng Rakgoale, MEC for the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure. The Infrastructure Investment Plan is the cornerstone of the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa in October 2020.

Over the next six months, the Department of Transport, through SANRAL, will monitor and assess the impact of the interventions which have been put in place. This will enable SANRAL to generate audit reports, which will form the basis for validation of the work undertaken and the turn-around time for attending to potholes in Limpopo.
