Peter Kiramba is an artist for other artists

Peter Kiramba, owner of Munene Art Gallery at the Kamogelo Tourism Centre, is an artist who gets his inspiration from giving upcoming artists exposure in his gallery.

“We pride ourselves in dealing in locally created art, crafts and curios which local and international tourists find interesting to have as souvenirs and gifts,” Peter told the Herald. As an accomplished painter and sculptor, he knows how much effort it takes to make it as an artist.

“I do murals and landscape paintings myself. Now that I own the gallery, working with other artists by giving them exposure and an opportunity to develop their talent by having their art displayed in the shop, is very satisfying,” he said. According to Peter, it all started with him exploring what he is capable of.

“I wanted to experience how it feels to paint. I also had an older friend who mentored me. I watched him paint and realised I could do it too. I love nature and often used to take photos and challenge myself to paint my photos. One day a friend invited me to join him to attend an art exhibition. I was blown away by what people are capable of and realised that you can make a living from being an artist. That made me take my artwork seriously,” he added.

“I get inspiration from people who see my work and can relate to it,” Peter said. “I also love it when an upcoming artist brings his or her artwork to the shop and they are able to make a living from their talent, especially with the unemployment being so high.” Peter said that although the future is unpredictable, he hopes to broaden exposure to his work and of the artists selling their work in his gallery by either having an exhibition or by supplying outlets countrywide.
