Lerry uses traditional techniques and materials to produce Tsonga attire

A 24-year-old woman is using traditional techniques and materials to produce Tsonga attire. Ntsakiso Lerry Chabalala’s interest in making Xibelani, a Tsonga attire used for dancing, was sparked after she lost her job at a major supermarket chain last year.

Ntsakiso, from Dzingidzingi village outside Giyani, told the Herald that she has always had a passion for traditional clothing. “I have always
loved Xibelani since I was a child. So when I lost my job, I decided to give it a try and I found that I was good at it. “Although I am self-taught, I was assisted by two older ladies who advised me on what the right materials and techiques are,” she said.

She was also inspired by Giyani star, Sho Majodzi when she saw how Majodzi embraced her culture. “I started making Xibelani for my child, and I posted it on my Facebook page not looking for any reaction from it. “But I was amazed by the positive responses, with people sharing my post, and some enquired about the price.

“My first customer was a woman from Giyani Section E, and she recommended me to her friends, and someone suggested that I also make head wraps, and I have not looked back,” added Lerry. Lerry studied business management at Central Johannesburg TVET College. She hopes to one day own a successful business to employ young people from her village to help reduce unemployment.
