Local YouTubers win Amazing Race

Local home scholars and YouTubers, the brother and sister duo Timothy (19) and Jessica (17) Duguid won the very first Limpopo Amazing Race presented in Magoebaskloof recently.

The two adventurers and nature enthusiasts told the Herald that the race started with wall-climbing and a canopy tour. “We decided that I will do the wall-climbing since it required physical strength, and Jessica did the canopy tour. I came second in the event,” Timothy said.

This was followed by a 5-question quiz on ‘Know your Limpopo’. “The questions were quite hard but we were able to answer them by the grace of God.” The next challenge was to pick five avocados from trees which proved to be much more challenging than what they anticipated.

“We had to take our shoes off and stepped onto thorns. I salute farm workers who pick avocados daily, your hands get really tired,” said Jessica. The next activity required them to re-enact the Queen Modjadji story. They were given five minutes to research it online and write a poem and act it out.

“I did the storytelling while Timothy did the acting,” added Jessica. Timothy and Jessica also had to negotiate a maze.

As the winners of this challenge, they had to taste five beers and guess which one was the 2021 winning beer. “Since I am at the legal age to drink, I had to be the one to do the tasting. I chose the correct one and that made us the overall winners,” said Timothy.

Malindi Duguid, their mother, said the fact that they were able to work together, taught them teamwork.

She said Timothy and Jessica attended school until grades 2 and 4. “Both my husband and I are qualified teachers. For primary education, we followed the TCE (Theocentric Christian Education) curriculum as we wanted to teach our children the word of God.

“For secondary education, we changed to Cambridge International. “They’re currently doing their final year with Cambridge AS level.” Timothy and Jessica both love the outdoors and are qualified snake rescuers and hold level 3 first aid qualifications.

“They both have YouTube channels focussing on teaching people about nature,” Malindi said.

The channels are called ‘The_Fiery_Sword’ and ‘Nature and Wildlife Guy’. The organiser of the first Limpopo Amazing Race, Thabiso Sekhula, said the race was a success. “The aim was to show off the beautiful destinations we have in the area. “Our partners were Magoebaskloof Canopy Tours, Boschoek Farm, Amorentia Estate, Zwakala Breweries, and Kings Walden,” he concluded.
