Ntombhi rubs shoulders with big names

Multi-award-winning Giyani praise singer, Ntombi Ya Mutsonga, blessed the Marula Festival in Phalaborwa on Saturday, April 9 with her praise-singing.

She shared a stage with well-known people like Ami Faku, Mr. Bow, Motlanalo, and Winnie Mashaba. “It is a great privilege for me as a newcomer to the entertainment industry to be rubbing shoulders, as one of the MCs, with well-known people,” she said. “Many of them are internationally known and I realised that praise singing is not my only talent, the gig showed that I am versatile and I am growing as an artist,” she told the Herald.

She also added that she is hoping that her role as an MC at the event will create new opportunities for her. Being able to get a gig at the Marula Festival is a memory that she will forever cherish. “The highlight was to interact with people, pouring out my energy to the audience and getting the same reaction and energy in return, it really was amazing,” she said.

“I liked that I was able to usher prominent people onto the stage for their performances,” she said. Although Ntombi Ya Mutsonga made a name for herself as a praise singer, she has decided to expand her talent through writing too. “I have a lot of poems which I have been writing and I want to share them with my fans and hopefully they will be able to read and re-enact them.

“Writing down my poetry has contributed to my journey, it is an interesting new aspect of my work,” she said. “I want to reinforce the legacy of Xitsonga poems, to enable teachers to teach learners the poems, teach them how to write poetry and how to become a successful poet,” she added.

She said she hopes that through her work and poetry, young people are encouraged to embrace and promote their culture with the necessary discipline it requires. “It is important that we know where we come from. I do not only entertain people, I am also involved in a campaign to provide sanitary pads to girls to help them not to miss school,” she said.

The Ntombi Ya Mutsonga Foundation also assists girls with toiletries. She says many young girls stay in relationships as they are provided with these basic necessities. “By giving them toiletries, they get to be less dependent on these necessities and stand up for themselves,” she added.

Ntombi Ya Mutsonga has become a popular figure at events since she first debuted by ushering the president of South Africa into parliament for his first sitting in recent years.
