Yola follows in her father’s footsteps

Yola Quinn is a professional artist from Hoedspruit who grew up watching her father be creative through his work.

“Born into a creative family, my father being an artist himself, I knew early on in my life that I would follow a vocation in the arts. “I studied fine art at Natal Technikon, specialising in painting and ceramics.

I have been painting professionally for the past eighteen years and also run workshops and art classes covering the different aspects of painting ranging from methods and techniques to enabling personal expression through the medium of art ” said Yola.

Her work is inspired largely by her appreciation of the beauty she encounters in the natural world. “I like the paintings to portray a magical quality and capture more than what simply meets the eye. My work and the creative act of painting become a doorway to the soul, it demands an authentic opening to the creative essence that lies within.

An important part of the painting process for me is my ability to quieten the mind and ‘get out of the way’ to allow the flow of this gentle yet dynamic creative force,” she added. Yola grew up on a sugar cane farm on the north coast of KwaZulu-Natal and most of her childhood was spent outdoors which created a deep connection to nature.

“This bond remains strong and ever-present to this day. I am thrilled to be exhibiting at the Warren Carey Wildlife Gallery in Hoedspruit and I am looking forward to hosting an upcoming six-week oil painting course on Thursday mornings at the gallery,” she said.
