Hoedspruit designer expresses herself through crocheting

40-year-old Natalie Rabie from Hoedspruit came up with a new style for people who like decorative animal heads on their walls.

“Many people like to have decorative animals but do not like to use real animal heads,” she said. She saw it as a great idea to create these heads by crocheting. “I felt like since I have always liked crocheting, why not make a business out of it. “Crochet is my way to create beautiful things, it is an art everyone can relate to in some way. “I have a love for colour. The world needs more colour in it and I try to do my part by brightening someone’s day. South Africa is a rainbow nation after all,” said Natalie.

Natalie is a professional interior designer who originally hails from KwaZulu-Natal. “As an interior designer, it is easier for me to come up with trendy ideas and what colours to use. “I also spent a lot of time in Cape Town before relocating to Hoedspruit. “I get inspiration from my surroundings,” she added. She told Herald that she taught herself how to crochet and has been practicing the craft for approximately 20 years now. “Over time it has evolved as I got better with more exotic ideas. “It took loads of trials and errors as I had to learn from scratch.

“Creating beautiful art and interior design is my full-time business. “I decided (in the middle of a pandemic) to open my own business to showcase my art. “I try to infuse pop art into the design as much as possible,” she concluded.
