Entries are invited to Art Festivus

A passion for all things art has motivated a local music teacher and performer to present the third Art Festivus Tzaneen competition.

The first competition was organised and presented two years ago by Mareli van der Walt, who is a well-known local musician and music teacher.

Last year the competition was held virtually due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

This year she has joined forces with Die Hoërskool Ben Vorster who will host some of the performances and exhibitions as well as a festival from September 20 to 23 with guest artists and winners of the various categories.

Mareli, who holds an honours degree with music and psychology from the North-West University, told the Herald that her real passion lies with music therapy and that all proceeds from the competition will go towards presenting classes and therapy sessions for local old age homes and children’s homes.

She also hopes to be able to buy less privileged yet talented music pupils instruments.

She said the festival is presented to lift the spirits of locals during the pandemic.

The categories are Art, Choir, Instrumental, Reading, Photography, Dance, Drama and Vocal and anyone from any age can enter.

The “Aqua Kleuters Kindermusiekgroep” has also entered the competition.

Winners will receive cash prizes. Entries for the competition close on 27 August and will be judged by a panel of local people with expertise in various fields.

Entries are R100 per person and R85 per person if a group is entered.

She said that they are also not only looking for the best performances but will also award those who have an X-factor in each of the categories. For more information on the competition and how to enter, WhatsApp Mareli at 084 247 4558.
