Come join the Phalaborwa venac poetry session

A Phalaborwa man is on a mission to reconnect residents with their cultural roots.

Kgwadi Ngoatje, founder of mobile studios and Rainbow Nation Arts Foundation (NPO), is calling on the people of Phalaborwa to be part of the Strictly Venac Poetry session.

The event will take place on Saturday, July 31 at the View Chisanyama and Car Wash in Namakgale.

Entry fee to the venue is R20.

The event will also be streamed live on various platforms in order to adhere to the Covid-19 regulations.

Kgwadi, together with Sydwel Ngwenya, a lecturer by profession with a love of the arts, are on a mission to revive the pride in speaking vernacular languages.

They say that by 2030 it is possible that most children will not be able to construct a full sentence in their own mother tongue.

Kgwadi was born and bred in Namakgale, but his passion for the arts has taken him to other parts of the world including Turkey, Europe and Mozambique.

“I have been thinking of ways to unite the community, and I believe poetry is the easiest route.

We are encouraging people to write poetry in their mother tongue, as we believe it is important to know where you come from.

“We want to encourage people to be proud of their culture and language.

“African youths today embrace foreign cultures and languages, they think it is more important than their own culture,” he said.

The R20 contribution will go towards buying a wheelchair for a local woman who is disabled.
