Give your dressing room a makeover

Remember a makeover (even a mini one) doesn’t happen overnight. It takes time to find a look and system that works for you. Start with a good wardrobe clear-out and do it Marie Kondo style. Anything that doesn’t spark joy or you haven’t worn in over a year should be donated or given away. Separate your clothes into seasons and follow these useful guidelines.  

New paint colour? Walls and ceilings painted in the same or very similar colours give the illusion of a bigger space. You also want a look that’s fresh and light, but not too sterile so go for slightly warmer tones.

• Look at the room’s lighting; is there enough natural light and do you need a light fixture?
• Can the neighbours see you? Take measurements or look for ready-made blinds.
• Think about mirrors and your plug points such as the one for your hairdryer as it needs to be near the mirror.
• A feature wall or floating shelves add an instant update and you can display personal items.
• A lovely rug adds texture and warmth.
• If you’re on a budget, consider baskets and shelves as they’re cheaper than drawers.
• Decide if you like to hang or fold most of your clothes.
• Accessories, swimwear, shoes and bags all need a place.
• Be clever with storage: put clothes you aren’t going to wear for a while into clear and labelled containers or bags and store them in your higher cupboards. You can also use the back of your cupboard doors to hang necklaces, belts or get a shoe rack.
• Make sure you have enough hooks.
• Laundry basket: the best ones are often for sale on the side of the road so keep your eye out. • If the space is big enough, invest in an ottoman that doubles up with inside storage. Cover it in a bright velvet or fun pattern to add interest and instant glamour.

Decor tip: If you don’t have a walk-in closet or enough cupboard space, allocate some extra wall space for a fashion rail, and use baskets and shelves for added storage. A hat stand is also a win for caps, hats and even necklaces and you could store handbags upright in an old trunk placed at the end of your bed.
