How to make the most of your Easter long weekend

Long weekends are for relaxing with family and friends. The Herald has a few great ideas to make the most of this special time!

Hiking

Enjoy the lovely autumn weather in Limpopo and go hiking on one of the many hiking trails in Magoebaskloof. Sandy Leigh Moore of The Mountain Company knows all the trails and will be able to assist with a great experience. Whatsapp her at 082 441 8088. Another great trail is the Leopard trail that starts at the Blyde Canyon Forever Resort. There are at least three short routes (1–4 hours) that can also be linked together as a 5-hour walk. Each trail is marked by a different symbol so you won’t get lost. No booking is necessary. Entrance is R50 per person that includes the trail permit fee and is payable at the entrance to Blyde Resort. For more information, phone 086 122 6966.

Easter Sunday lunch

Enjoy a leisurely Easter Sunday lunch at one of the many restaurants in the area. The Magoebaskloof Hotel with its stunning views over the valley has a buffet that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Call 015 590 9910 to book a table. You can also hike down to the waterfall for a little exercise. Tzaneen Country Lodge, situated on the R71 outside of town, is serving up an incredible feast for Easter Sunday at their legendary lunch buffet! Take the kids out for an Easter egg hunt. In Hoedspruit, an egg hunt will be held at The Thirsty Giraffe on Easter Sunday. Kids of all ages can participate from 11:30 to 13:00. Tickets are R100. Ten magic stamps will be hidden throughout the garden and if you can find them you will get a goodie bag. The restaurant and bar will be open for parents. Booking is essential. Contact Leigh on 081 030 4586.

Learn all about reptiles

Hoedspruit Reptile Centre is a great outing for the whole family. Walk through the centre on your own and view the many spectacular animals on display. One can read the easy-to-understand informative display legends for yourself. They are open 7 days a week from 08:00 to 17:00 including holidays. Call them on 015 795 5203 to find out more.

OK Sugar Stores

OK Sugar Stores in Tzaneen is running a fun competition. Find the Easter bunny (see below) hiding on selected social media posts until 5 April, take a screenshot of him, and send it to them on WhatsApp 015 307 3539 (Yes this number is on WhatsApp) and stand a chance to win big. If you are planning a braai, OK stores’ butcheries boast quality meat for a delicious barbeque.

Stroll on the dam wall

With the dams in the region being filled to capacity, a stroll on the Tzaneen Dam wall is a great experience to enjoy the water rushing through the sluices. You can take your dogs with you as long as they are on a leash. The Ebenezer Dam is also nearing its 100% capacity and it just might start overflowing this weekend. Make sure you do not miss it. Visit the dam wall for a spectacular view of the water and surrounding mountains. Take the turnoff from on the Georges Valley road (R528). Be careful of the potholes.

Take the kids to the park

The Minitzani park in Boundary Street in Tzaneen has been beautifully revamped and now boasts a security fence. Enjoy a relaxing morning (or afternoon) in this little gem of a park while your little ones roam the many ‘rides’. You can even have a picnic. Please take note that there are rules before entering (i.e. no glass bottles are allowed).

Fairview Hotel is celebrating

Take the whole family for a fun day at Fairview Hotel and Spa in Tzaneen. This icon is celebrating 25 years on Saturday 3 April from 10:00 onwards with a jumping castle, various food and craft stalls an egg hunt and a raffle. Artist André Visagie will provide entertainment and if you prefer to do a round of golf, it will cost you R25 for juniors and R50 for seniors. Entry to the hotel is free and you can have your car washed for only R25. Call 015 307 2679 for more info.

The end

Make use of the Spur offer of only R60 for a hamburger on Mondays – a fitting end to the long weekend!
