Tracker mauled to death in Limpopo national park

Two young male lions were put down after the attack, says the police.

The death of 27-year-old tracker at a reserve in Thabazimbi, Limpopo was confirmed by the South African National Parks (SanParks) in a statement on Monday, 8 March.

According to Reynold “Rey” Thakhuli, SANParks Acting Head of Communications, the man was attacked by two young lions within the contractual land in the Marakele National Park on Saturday, 6 March.

Police Spokesperson, Brig Motlafela Mojapelo said the deceased, 27-year-old Malibongwe Mfila, was attacked and killed while performing his duties at the Marataba Safari Lodge.

“It is alleged he was busy driving around in the bush checking where animals such as elephants, lions and others were in order to advise the guides as and when they do game drives, when he was attacked and killed by two lions.”

The park manager was alerted to the incident by a passerby who noticed the lions eating human remains. The lions were immediately tracked and put down. Shamba the Lion killed after attack on game park owner.

An inquest docket has been opened at the Hoopdaal Police Station and investigations into the incident still continue.

Reacting to the news, SanParks Chief Executive Officer, Fundisile Mketeni said “this incident has left us distraught” and sent his condolences to the family, friends and staff at Marataba Safari Lodge.
