Jan turns his passion into a ‘gold mine’

“Thousands of people would walk over a gold mine without discovering it, but only one person would use imagination, dig down and discover the richest gold deposits on earth,” says Jan Mbombi.

Jan, a 22-year-old from Nkowankowa, has found his own “gold mine” by using old clothes and plastic bottles to produce his artwork. “Growing up in a less privileged environment was hard.

“I remember in 2017 very well when my mother didn’t have enough money to fund my studies. I always wanted to become an occupational health and safety (OHS) officer. This is before I became aware of the realities of life as a young adult,” he said

I had to man up and start being innovative. It hasn’t been an easy route, but with God on your side everything is possible.

He turned all my impossibilities into possibilities.

Social platforms such as YouTube were very handy when I was searching on what to do for a living,” said Jan.

He chose his specific artform because of his love for crafting.

“I use old clothes such as towels and ladies’ pantyhose to produce my craftwork. Upcycling plastic bottles are also very useful. I have registered a company that specialises in gardening and landscaping, as well as interior designing,” he added.

Jan went to school at Nkowankowa Primary School. In Grade 4 he moved to Ritavi Primary School and did his matric at DZJ Mtebule High School in 2016.

“I am inspired by artists such as Ester Mahlangu, Stew GP and Ponani Oceans Art,” concluded Jan.
