Building my dream car

If you are a petrolhead like I am, you will know the pleasure of taking the long way home, making a pit stop at your favourite car dealership, even if it is just to look at your dream car.

As some of you might know already, I am quite fond of Italian cars, more specifically from the Ferrari marque. As I am not allowed to visit the Scuderia South Africa dealership situated in Johannesburg, due to the COVID-19 lockdown, I recently visited the Ferrari website to get in my supercar fix. After clicking around I found myself on the configurator page and this is where all the fun started.

The dream

While Ferrari has a variety of models on offer, one of my personal favourites remains the 488 Pista. The Pista, based on the 488 GTB, is a track focussed weapon and comes with a power full twin-turbocharged, 3.9-litre V8 motor producing 530 kW and 770 N.m of torque.  Mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, the 488 Pista can sprint to 100km/h in just 2.85 seconds and reach speeds of just over 340km/h.

Exterior

While the signature colours on a Ferrari is either Rosso (Red) or Rosso Corsa (Racing Red), I decided to go for Grigio Silverstone (Silverstone Grey) matched by the 20-inch forged wheels finished in Matt Grigio Corsa. Further bolstering the dark grey theme is the addition of the carbon exterior components. In contrast, I chose Giallo (Yellow) brake callipers to match the shields fitted on the three-quarter panels. Extending over the Pista is the Argento Nurburgring racing livery, complementing the titanium exhaust tips at the rear.

Interior

While I know Justin usually opts for extravagant colours on the interiors of his cars, I kept the Daytona Racing Carbon seats in my Pista black with yellow inlays and contrast stitching which is matched by the Ferrari emblems on the four-point racing harnesses. As for carpets, what carpets? I added a carbon fibre floor with some mats. The driver (me) is treated to matt finishes on the carbon fibre interior trim and a yellow rev counter.

Where is my wallet

After you have specified your dream Ferrari you can download a brochure of the vehicle you specified with realistic renderings. You can also get the unique build code and contact your closest Ferrari dealership and place your order. While I would have loved to do that, contrary to belief, local motoring journalist doesn’t earn as much as some of our counterparts in foreign countries. Well now let go specify my 812 GTS.
