PHALABORWA: Man arrested for burning girlfriends home

The Police in Namakgale outside Phalaborwa have arrested a 33 year old man for two counts of Arson at Mashishimale village on June 9.

“It is alleged that the suspect phoned the victim and threatened to burn her house while she was still away and when she came back home, she found that her three roomed house was on fire”, Limpopo police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe stated.

It is alleged that the suspect continuously threatened the family through cellphone messages as well as phone calls.

“We could not sleep at night as we feared for our lives, he sent a message the very same day stating that he is going to burn the house down as soon as there is nobody home”, A close relative told the Herald.

At about 20:30, subsequently, the suspect proceeded to the victim’s parental home where he also set their house on fire and within a short space of time, the suspect was arrested after the swift reaction by the Police.

“The suspect is appearing before the Namakgale Magistrate court on two counts of arson, during these incidents, there were no injuries or fatalities and the estimated damage caused is more than R100 000”, Ngoepe further stated.

“Members of the Community are once more advised that in case they experience any form of domestic violence related problems, they must consult the relevant authorities for intervention rather than resorting to violence acts including killing or destruction of properties” concluded Ngoepe.

The motive behind these incidents is unknown but domestic violence cannot be ruled out and Police investigations are continuing.
