The world celebrates children day

International Children’s Day is commemorated today, June 1.

Since 1925, the  World Conference for the Well-being of Children in Geneva, Switzerland, proclaimed June 1 to be International Children’s Day.

This day coincide with the South Africa’s National Child Protection Week which began on May 29 with the theme “Let us all protect children to move South Africa forward.”

The National Child Protection Week is marked annually to raise awareness for the rights of children. It aims to mobilize all sectors of society to care for and protect children.

The focus of this year is on child labour and exploitation as well as unaccompanied minors from the neighbouring countries.

The two selected areas for the opening and the closing of the campaign are predominantly farming areas where incidences of child labour and exploitation are prevalent.

The recent incident in Ribone Village, Giliad in Polokwane, where a farm worker is alleged of killings of two five-year old children, has clearly shown the absurd and cruelty actions that continues to be inflicted to innocent children despite the campaigns that are underway annually.

The South African Government urges everyone to wear a green ribbon during Child Protection Week to show support for promotion of the rights, care and protection of children.
