Merensky archers best in ABO Schools League

The Merensky Archery Club has been named the top archery school in the ABO Schools league.

This follows their participation in the two-day prestigious African Bowhunting Organization’s (ABO) Triple Crown Leg 3 Di competition at Wildcrete in Pretoria over this past weekend.

Ten of the finest Merensky archers travelled to Pretoria to take part in what has been described as one of the toughest competitions in the sport.

The archers were divided into groups comprising of between four and nine competitors and sent into the field in what is known as a 3-Di event.

During this event the shooters aim at mock-animal targets as they would appear in their natural environment and are scored based on their grouping on the target.

This is slightly more challenging than the traditional archery target shooting as it forces the archers to navigate rocky and often uneven terrain covered with shrubbery, trees and outcrops which obscure the view.

The targets are placed over distances ranging between 13 and 50 meters and archers compete according to draw, weight, sex and age.

Both of Merensky’s teams claimed podium positions and boast a host of individual achievements.

The first team, comprising of Lin-Mari Theron, Canell Jackson, Sean Hunt and Ryan Jackson were crowned tournament champions while the second team; Dewald Haagner, Armand Wiers, Ashley Hunt and Rohan Wewege, took third place overall.

The following archers obtained provincial qualifying scores: Canell Jackson (x2), Dawie Theron, Sean Hunt (x2) and Beneche Jackson (x2). Lin-Mari Theron shot a national qualifier and reached the heavily sought after Protea qualifying score, earning her a gold medal in the FY division. Dawie Theron, Martin Mostert, Armand Wiers and Sean Hunt won silver medals in the MBR, MC and YMR divisions while sisters Canell and Benéche Jackson claimed bronze in FY and FBO.

It’s safe to say the Plasies are again this year the cream of the archery crop.
