Thabiso wants to break the world record

With 52 medals and a trophy, Thabiso Mabasa is a force to be reckoned with on the running track.

The grade 12 learner from Magoza Secondary School does not only win in the running track but the same goes to her academics.

All of Thabiso Mabasa’s 52 medals and her trophy, she is a force to be reckoned with in the running track.

Her passion for sports began in primary school where she participated in almost every sport until she realised that she does good as a runner. She started running in grade 5.

The 19 year old runner, said running is in her blood.

She might be a beast on the running track but Thabiso Mabaso has a heart of gold. She is a dedicated and focused runner who aims for nothing but the number one spot.

What keeps her going is the thought of doing better than her competitors and believing that nothing is impossible.

“When I see people running on TV especially if they are from South Africa, I believe I can also do it,” said Thabiso.

She participated in the Limpopo Schools Athletics (Limsa) in 2016 and represented her school for the national cross country.

“I would like to see myself being part of Team South Africa as an athlete. My dream is to represent my country in the olympics and I would like to break the world record in the 800 metres,” she said.

Her role model is Caster Semenya, because she doesn’t undermine herself and she followed her dreams.

Although they might not afford everything her family is supportive of her passion. “Them letting me go to training means a lot to me,” she said.

She also took part in the Mayor’s Cup in March and came second.

Her advice to aspiring athletes is that they do not focus on the fact that the race is hard and also to not give up. “Exercise, the more you do it is the more running becomes easy,” she said.
