Stanford Lake College netbal girls win Treverton festival

Stanford Lake College’s netball 1st team was invited to attend the 2017 Treverton Sports festival once again.

The festival always creates an opportunity to try out new combinations in the team before the season starts and to expose the girls to teams that we would not usually play against.

The standard of netball at Stanford is constantly improving and they were in the position to take 13 girls to the festival, instead of the usual 10. Day one brought nerves and excitement as the girls stepped onto the court. Their adrenalin was put to good use, as they walked away against Tyger Valley with their first victory of the year, 32-2. This match really set the tone for the rest of the festival. That same day they played Dainfern (27-8), Jabula (23-6) and De La Salle (12-7), walking away with confidence from their four victories.

Despite the girls having to run in between the Hockey field and Netball court to make it in time for their matches, they seemed to simply accelerate in their performances. One of their toughest matches was against Curro Hillcrest, who were also unbeaten in the festival so far. However, the girls played some beautiful netball and their confidence oozed on the court, ending victorious over their competitors 25-8. Another tough match was against Springfield (Cape Town), whose girls towered over the Stanford players; however, this proved to be no barrier, and they finished with another victory 17-11.

In the end, the girls won all 14 of their matches convincingly. The team was led exceptionally well by Shikara Janke and every single player on the team did their job and contributed to the outstanding victories over the four days. It was great to see the growth in our players, especially those who were new to the team. Well done girls on a fantastic couple of days!
