Maruleng Celtics lose despite comeback

Winners Park clinched a 1-0 victory over Maruleng Celtics in a Nedbank Cup Challenge match played at Xikukwani Stadium in Giyani on Saturday despite a halftime pep talk by Celtics’ ‘Big Boss’.

The match started with intense, high-pressure attacking football from Winners Park. They launched relentless attacks from all directions, keeping the Maruleng Celtics’ goalkeeper busy as shots frequently whizzed past the posts, missing the net by inches. Through persistent efforts, Winners Park eventually managed to sneak a goal into the net, making it 1-0 against Maruleng Celtics just a few minutes before halftime.

Had they converted all their chances, Winners Park could have easily scored five goals in the first half alone, as they exerted immense pressure on Maruleng Celtics but struggled to capitalise on their many opportunities. Maruleng Celtics’ dull performance in the first half infuriated their head coach, Luxolo Ngcuthushe, known as ‘The Big Boss’ in football circles. His frustration was more evident during the halftime break as he loudly reprimanded his players, saying, “What’s difficult about playing proper football? Why do you have to play according to how they want it? Have you forgotten what you’re here for?”

He then warned them against relying on long passes, stating he didn’t want to see anyone playing a long ball unless necessary. “We need to be able to break their line because right now we’re not doing that,” he barked in a voice that could be heard more than 30 metres away. In the second half, Maruleng Celtics looked like a completely different team. The intensity of Winners Park’s attacks gradually decreased as Maruleng Celtics settled into the match with greater control, fighting like a hungry lion determined to find a meal before dark.

It was clear that their coach’s pep talk had worked, as Maruleng Celtics dominated the second half, keeping the action in Winners Park’s half for most of the period without letting up. Despite their impressive performance, it came too late. The match ended with a 1-0 score in favour of Winners Park, leaving Maruleng Celtics disappointed.
