Cyclists brave heat at the Mooketsi Challenge

The Mooketsi mountain bike challenge took place in sweltering heat in the Koedoes Valley on September 16, with cyclists racing through the games reserve, farmland, and untouched bushveld in 10km, 35km, and 70km routes respectively.

In the 70km race elite rider, Franco Pelser was the overall winner, crossing the finish line with 03:18:05 on the clock. Chantal Weyers won the women’s race in a time of 04:04:16. Weyers also won the sub-veteran division. Derek Ackerman took a win in the men’s sub-veteran division with a time of 03:22:34 and Bill Noel won the men’s veteran division. BJ van Zyl was the first master to cross the finish line and Gert Myburg won the grand master division.

Shani Rudder was the winner of the women’s elite division and Chanette Haasbroek won the veteran’s division. Roelien Britz won the master’s division. In the 35km race, more than 160 cyclists took on the challenge with Henro van der Walt crossing the finish line first, winning the youth division. Van der Walt finished the race in 01:24:30 followed by fellow youth rider, Gordon Noel in second place just more than a second later.

Waldo Strijdom took third place overall and won the junior division with a time of 01:28:17. Sub-veteran rider, Ashley van Schalkwyk won the women’s division in a time of 01:37:59 with Anke Rood taking second place and winning the junior division in a time of 01:45:36. Zianté Steyn won the sub junior division and Dané Strijdom won the youth division with a time of 01:56:50. Lilly Pohl won the elite division and Retha Beukes the veteran’s division.

Steph Baker was the first master to cross the finish line and Andra Thompson won the grand master division. Chris Shields took first place in the sub-junior division with a time of 1:47:01, while Anton Bam won the men’s elite division and Henk van Wyngaardt won the men’s sub-veteran division. Nielen Weyers was the first veteran to cross the finish line and Neels van der Merwe won the masters division with a time of 01:40:48.

Fanus Eksteen won the grand master division. In the 10km race, Altus Willemse was the first rider to cross the finish line and Nelda Strydom took first place in the women’s division. Leah Haarhoff won the Nippers division and Nelda Strijdom took first place in the Sprogs division. Payton de Graeve took first place in the boys’ nippers division and Pieter-Willem Griesel won the u/8 boys division.
