GGM tournament finally kicks off again

The long-awaited Greater Giyani Mayor’s Cup finally kicked off on Saturday.

It is the first time it is hosted since the Covid-19 pandemic and the Greater Giyani Mayor, Thandi Zitha, officially launched the tournament at Giyani Stadium accompanied by her executive and the new municipal manager, Duncan Khosa. The tournament, which is scheduled to run until July 1, is expected to attract scouts from the big teams in the country who would be looking to find new talent.

“We specifically requested that there be a representation of youth among the players because we wanted to give them a platform where they could showcase their skills,” said the mayor. The schedule will see teams participating at the same time but at different venues to have the final on July 1 on the main pitch. The same number of female teams have entered as the men, suggesting that the women’s competition will be much more competitive than in previous years.
