Vicky signs with the Kaizer Chiefs

Great things keep happening for the talented 17-year-old soccer star, Vicky Mkhawana.

Vicky has just signed a three-year contract with Kaizer Chiefs less than a year after he was selected as a developing young player for the Kaizer Chiefs Foundation. “God is showing himself in my life. Who would have thought that at seventeen I would be signing to play in the PSL? It still feels like a dream, my mom cannot believe it either. I also got emotional when I saw her cry, it’s not every day that I see her cry,” he said. “I am ready for the next season and hope to make a difference.”

Vicky started to play soccer on the dusty fields of Nkowankowa. After his selection for the foundation, he was chosen for the South African U17 soccer team, which was in action at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCon). In February they attended a seven-day camp. “I am delighted to be part of one of the biggest teams in South Africa. The Kaizer Chiefs family welcomed me with open arms. Not everyone who plays the game has the chance to be part of the big teams or a national team.

“I would like to encourage everyone who is passionate about soccer to never give up because it can take you far,” he added. During one of the AFCon matches against Zambia, Vicky scored two goals and earned the Player of the Match award for his performance. “It’s really amazing to find yourself receiving an award, especially when playing for the national team. I just played hard and wanted to prove my worth, and also prove that they did not waste their time making me part of the team,” says Vicky.

“My journey was not always simple; at times I had no accommodation going to selections, this is before I was selected for Kaizer Chiefs. I used to play wearing torn boots, but God saw something in me, and He gave me a chance to show the world what I am made of,” added Vicky. His home coach, Peace Khosa, said that he always knew that Vicky had talent. “We as Nkowankowa Barcelona will continue developing players of Vicky’s calibre,” he said.
