Leswika FC scoops Charity Cup

Soccer lovers were in for a treat as this past weekend saw the Kgosihadi Consulting Charity Cup takes place at the Nkowankowa Stadium where four teams locked horns for the coveted cup.

Leswika Classic FC emerged winners of the top 4 tournaments which was held on Friday, September 24 as they defeated runner-ups Sedan United Football Club in the final to claim the first prize which was an amount of R7500 and two kits to use in the upcoming season. Coach of the winning team from Tickyline, Denise Thembi Maunatlala commended his team’s performance in the tournament.

“We were able to test ourselves especially because the league is coming up soon so this helps in our pre-season preparations. I am very satisfied with the results, winning this means that we are on the right track. Our confidence is very high and we can enter the league with our heads held high.”

He said the R7500 would go a long way into helping them. “We will use some of it to affiliate for the league, and with the two kits we can practice for the league, as for the rest of the spoils the boys need to enjoy it, they worked hard.” One of the sponsors, Romeo Mashaba from RM Mashaba Projects said the tournament which was a collaboration between RM Mashaba Proj, PMR and Kgoshigadi Engineers was a concerted effort aimed at bringing the flair back to soccer.

“Soccer is no longer fashionable, in the sense that there is no longer a buzz around sports as drug and alcohol use has now taken over. Back in the day, we were focused on sports and spent our time enjoying it, so this is an attempt to reinvigorate the love for soccer. You can even see the facilities deteriorate for not being used, so we are trying to do our bit in bringing back the flair in soccer and hopefully ignite the spark that will find the next PSL and Bafana Bafana stars.”

Ntsako Ndlala, one of the players that featured in the master’s match which was a curtain-raiser for the final, said these kinds of activities were important for the development of local sports, especially soccer, and provided a platform for young people to express themselves and scouts to identify talent and that more of such meets were needed. “Not only on the side of sports development but the economic spinoff that comes with it.

“The involvement of private companies that are willing to inject cash into this kind of development is also impressive and I think the aspect of adding a master’s match is also important as people must be active and exercise.” “It was a big success, people came together and that creates social cohesion, also the performance of our local star King Monada capped it all of for a great tournament,” said Ndlala.
