New gala season underway for Shamu

Shamu Swimming Club recently competed in the sprint gala in Ellisras where swimmers performed well even though it is only the start of the swimming season.

In category 6 and younger, two swimmers, Riaze Haynes received two gold medals and one silver medal and Gabriella Loucao received two silver medals and one gold medal. In the 7-year-old category, Shamu was represented by Philippus Fourie with a bronze medal and Johannes Groenewald who achieved two 5th positions.

Inge du Plessis, in the 8-yearold category, received five gold medals and swam two new meet records. “Our 9-year-old’s were represented by Zoe Schmidt who managed to win one gold and one silver medal, whilst George Taylor received six gold medals and broke two records,” said Sheila Grobbelaar of Shamu.

Shamu’s 10-year-old’s were represented by Mari Bruwer – one silver and two bronze medals; Marny du Plessis four gold (with two records) and one silver medal; and Dale Nel with three silver and two bronze medals.

“We had two boys and one girl in the 11-year category – Yulinke Haynes with two silver and one bronze medal, Ethan Schmidt with one gold and three silver medals and Jamie Venter in a fourth place.”

Two swimmers competed in the 12-year-category, Jonea Pretorius and Wayne Swarts. Wayne received three gold (one record), one silver and one bronze medal. Mia Bruwer and Kaylie Groenewald swam in the 13-year-old category and Kaylie managed to receive three bronze medals.

“Our boys were represented by Johannes Fourie.” Joszua Joubert represented our 14-year-old’s with seven gold medals. “Jason Loucao and our Nel twins swam in the 15-year-old category and between them brought sixteen medals home. “Jason managed to swim seven gold, five of which were new meet records whilst Simone Nel received one gold, two silver and one bronze, sister Tylor received one silver and four bronze medals. “Our senior swimmer of the gala was Donia Smit (16) who managed a gold, silver and bronze medal,” said Grobbelaar.
