PHALABORWA: A fun walk for a healthy cause

The walk was attended by more than 100 people, young ones and adults who wished to raise awareness regarding health.

The Mpfuneto Youth Development (MYD) held their first Healthy Fun walk to honour the world Health Day sponsored by Midey group and Pick ‘n Pay, at Matiko-Xikaya in Lulekani on Saturday, April 6.

The Midey group sponsored them with Midey T-shirts, while PnP sponsored them with 24 bottles of water.

“The fun walk became more fun, as rain started falling while the race was on, but none of the participants stopped walking, they went on to the finish line,” said the proud MYD director, Given Baloyi.

“We have decided to have this event to make awareness to the community about healthy lifestyle and to encourage members of the community to be involved in healthy fitness and sports. This kind of event occurred for the first time in the community of Matiko-xikaya, it has never been done before,” said the founder and director of MYD organization, Given Baloyi.

He also stated that the walk was attended by more than 100 people, young ones and adults who wished to raise awareness regarding health.

“The fun walk became more fun, as rain started falling while the race was on. But none of the participants stopped walking, they went on to the finish line,” he said.

Baloyi mentioned that the race was a 5km walk from Old Burkina Faso sports ground, to Salvation in Christ Ministry in Matikoxikaya, then back to the sports ground, where the first 100 participants received medals.

Selby Mhlongo was the first participant to reach the finishing line.

He also said that the fun walk had motivated more young women in the community and that they have shown interest to be more involved in fitness training.

“They have requested us to get them a fitness trainer to assist them twice or three times a week. The community residents are excited to hear that Mpfuneto Youth Development will host a three- day Sports weekend in June, during the youth month, to celebrate the youth of 1976. We are targeting to have more than 600 participants,” exclaimed Baloyi.

Baloyi continued by saying that the participants were very happy to receive T-shirts and medals.
