Mayor tees off Agri Golf tournament

The tournament was organised in order to raise money for emerging farmers as part of the recent Agri Expo and a total of more than R80 000 was raised at the event.

Eighteen holes of spectacular golf under the bluest of Tzaneen skies were played last Friday, October 5, at Tzaneen Country Club for the 2018 Agri Golf competition.

The better-ball tournament, consisting of 19 teams, was teed off by the Mayor of Greater Tzaneen Municipality (GTM), Maripe Mangena. Despite never having played golf before, he took the challenge in good spirit and lined up to strike the ball, asking the eager onlookers with a smile, “Is that the right ball? It looks a lot smaller…”

The ball was struck and despite veering off into the crowds and barely making the fairway, the day’s play was opened and the first teams took to the greens.

The day was also commemorated with the planting of trees on the golf course. Mayor Mangena assisted by representatives from Tzaneen Country Club placed the saplings into their newly dug holes. More than ten trees were provided by the Parks division of the municipality with Simon Sebopetsa, one of the event organisers, telling the LETABA HERALD, “The trees were planted in remembrance of the event and to mark growth. The trees represent the future.”
