Giyani hosts inaugural legacy tournament this weekend

After a long absence, top flight football will return to Giyani this weekend when it hosts the inaugural Limpopo Soccer Legacy Tournament.

The one-day tournament featuring clubs from the Premier Soccer League, National First Division and ABC Motsepe will be played at Giyani Stadium on Sunday.

The tournament will kick-off at 10:00 with Black Leopards playing Ndengeza FC whilst Baroka FC take on TshakhumaTsha Madzivhandila at 12:00.The final will take place at 15:00.

Tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers retail outlets costing R50 (open stands) and R60 (grand stands) each.

Tournament organiser, Tshilidzi Musingadi of the South African Sports Legacy Museum says he’s excited to finally witness one of his dreams of bringing quality football closer to the people of Giyani.

“We are looking forward to this magnificent event and say thank you to the four Limpopo teams and their participation as we bring football to the Mopani district and the greater Limpopo community,” said Musingadi.

He added that the tournament will also be used to commemorate Mandela Month – with all four participating teams taking part in community service activities around Giyani.

“We are excited about being a part of this initiative that will honour Madiba while also helping us in our preparations for the coming season.

We have a new coach and some exciting new signings that we will be showcasing.

Hopefully this will start things off by winning this cup,” said Baroka Chief Executive, Morgan Mammila.

Newly-promoted Black Leopards Coach Joel Masutha said the reason they cancelled participating in a tournament elsewhere was to be part of the initiative in their community.

“We are using the spectacle to try some combinations,” said Masutha.

For Tshakuma and Ndengeza, it is a dream match-up against their more prominent teams, as they look to climb out from the National First Division and ABC Motsepe leagues, respectively.

“We’ve got a fresh squad this season after our first campaign as a team last season where we finished fifth in the league.

We definitely are aiming at improving ourselves and this is the perfect step,” said Tshakuma captain Tshepo Segoga.
Ndengezi skipper, Rofha Hlungwani said to play big teams is a step in the right direction for them as a young team as they are going to learn new things ahead of their own league season.
