Golden Birds lift Mahlo Ramalema Champions Cup

Ramalema Golden Birds beat their ArchRivals Ramalema Cosmos 4-3 on the penalty shoot-out in the inaugural Mahlo Ramalema Champions Cup at Tickyline GaRamalema on Saturday.

The event lived up to its main objective to alleviate crime and excessive usage of alcohol in the area as the community was brought to stand still and watched soccer and netball from morning till late.

Ramalema Cosmos under 15 sides kicked off the Champions Cup early in the morning in the build up to the main game with a 1-0 victory over Golden Birds’ juniors before the Golden Birds masters saw off Masokolara by 2-1, while in the netball Golden Birds beat All Birds 10-03.

Even though fans were not treated with goals in the regulation time in the main spectacle, they were indulged with good football and skills for their enjoyment.

As both teams failed to score in the open game, Golden Birds were the first team to lift the Champions Cup as they emerged victorious by 4-3 from the penalty spot.

However, the event organiser, Costa Mahlo declared the event as successful and vowed to make it bigger and better in the next edition.

“The event was successful since the message was well conveyed to our youth and the community of Ramalema.

Next year we are going to improve and we will invite management from the professional teams as well as national broadcasters to come to our shores,” said Mahlo.

“The motive is to encourage our children to participate in sports and with hopes that one day they will play in the professional level,” added the event organiser, Mahlo.

Mahlo also thanked Thabo Khunwane, Golden Birds coach; Bennet Modiba, the management of Cosmos and Koketso Sekhu for making everything possible. Golden Birds won gold medals and a floating trophy while Cosmos walked away with silver medals.
