Trail run in Wolkberg this weekend

The annual GlemenGold Wolkberg Trail Run is rated as one of the best stage trail races in South Africa by avid adventure junkies.

The race, this year taking place on 6 and 7 August, is a two-day stage race through the picturesque Wolkberg Mountains.

Runners summit the highest point in Limpopo, the Iron Crown, during the race. The race qualifies as an official SkyMarathon with casual runners participating on the second day.

For those with a heart for the conservation of the environment, this race is important for different reasons. According to the Friends of the Haenertsburg Grasslands (FroHg), the route of the ClemenGold Wolkberg Trail Run goes right through the critically endangered Woodbush Granite Grasslands, one of the most threatened South African vegetation types. In fact the Iron is a vital part of the grassland. These unique grasslands play a very important role in a highly water stressed region, and boast an extraordinary biodiversity with many plants and animals occurring nowhere else in the world.

GlemenGold, as naming sponsor of the trail run, this year made a special contribution to support the sterling efforts of FroHg. “With our feet planted firmly in the soil of various provinces of South Africa, we are dedicated to make a lasting contribution in terms of environmental sustainability,” says Marius du Plessis, ClemenGold CEO. “As an agricultural company, we acknowledge our dependency on a healthy environment and therefore we gladly support this initiative. The Wolkberg Mountains share a fascinating divide between the Olifants and Letaba River systems – both of which a vital part of our farming operations in Letsitele, Hoedspruit and Burgersfort.”
